The Magat Hydroelectric Power Plant is one of the largest hydro facilities in Luzon, with a maximum output of 388 megawatts (MW). It draws water from the Magat river through the multi-purpose Magat dam.

The national government began construction of the plant in February 1980 and completed the commissioning in Dec 1983. Under the Electric Power Industry Reform Act (EPIRA), the power facility was subject to privatization in 2006. Following a successful bid of US$530 million, SNAP took over operations on April 26, 2007.

Only the power components were privatized; the Magat dam and its re-regulating facilities downstream are owned and maintained by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA). Magat hydro has integrated four management systems: it is certified in Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OHSAS 18001), Environmental Management System (ISO 14001), Quality Management system (ISO 9001), and Asset Management System (ISO 55001).

Ambuklao Hydro

At its original capacity of 75 megawatts, the Ambuklao Hydroelectric Power Plant was one of the first large hydroelectric power plants in the Philippines and is one of the oldest. Constructed in 1950 and completed in 1956, the facility runs along the upper portion the Agno river.

In 2007, SNAP won the bid for the Ambuklao-Binga hydroelectric power complex for US$325 million, which consisted of Ambuklao and the 100-MW Binga Plant. Ambuklao hydro re-operated in 2011 as a 105-MW power plant following its rehabilitation and upgrading. The plant had been shut down and put under preservation since 1999 due to damage from the 1990 earthquake.

Ambuklao hydro has integrated four management systems: it is certified in Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OHSAS 18001), Environmental Management System (ISO 14001), Quality Management system (ISO 9001), and Asset Management System (ISO 55001).

Binga Hydro

The Binga Hydroelectric Power Plant was built in 1960 and lies 19 kilometers down stream of its sister facility, Ambuklao. SNAP won the public bid for Binga and Ambuklao, which were sold as a package under the power sector privatization program of the Philippine government, in 2007 for US$325million. Only the power components were privatized while the dams remain government-owned.

Binga hydro underwent refurbishment which began in 2010 and was completed in 2013. This refurbishment increased the Binga Plant�s capacity from 100 to 125MW. It is now capable of generating up to 140MW after further uprating.

Binga hydro has integrated four management systems: it is certified in Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OHSAS18001), Environmental Management System (ISO14001), Quality Management system (ISO9001), and Asset Management System (ISO55001).

Maris Hydro

Maris hydro is the first power plant constructed by SNAP since it acquired Magat hydro in 2007 through privatization. Construction of the PHP2.15 billion run-of-river hydro plant took about two years – it ` broke ground in late 2015 and was completed in November 2017. Maris hydro utilizes the water coming from Magat hydro that goes into the Maris re-regulating dam located downstream of Magat, before flowing into the Maris Main (South) Irrigation Canal.

The Maris hydro project was proposed by SNAP-Magat’s operations and maintenance team under the company’s business creativity and innovation program. It was then developed and implemented by the business development group and later turned over to SNAP-Magat for operation.

New Projects

Our Business Development Program aims to grow our renewable portfolio by looking at potential hydro projects in the Philippines, primarily within its current host communities in northern Luzon.

Alimit Hydro

SNAP is proposing to build the Alimit Hydropower Complex in the province of Ifugao with a potential capacity of 390 MW. The project has completed its feasibility study phase. It has secured agreements with its host municipalities and completed the Free Prior and Informed Consent process with the indigenous communities in the covered areas pending only the Certificate of Precondition (CP) from the National Commission of Indigenous Peoples (NCIP).

Magat BESS

The SNAP Magat BESS project (“SNAP BESS”) is located in Ramon, Isabela. It is an energy storage system with a 20-MW capacity and 20-MWh energy storage to be used primarily for ancillary services. Site survey works have been completed as part of the pre-construction and in preparation for the engineering design and permitting for the construction phase. The SNAP BESS project is targeted to commence commercial operations in 2023.

Magat Floating Solar

SNAP's 200-kilowatt (kW) pilot floating solar project was switched on June 27, 2019. Placed over a portion of the Magat reservoir in Isabela, the project harnesses the sun’s energy while optimizing the use of water resources in the Magat irrigation system. The pilot project and the initial pre-feasibility study conducted by SNAP on the floating solar have shown positive results. SNAP is now conducting a feasibility study (FS) to validate the initial results and confirm the viability of a commercial-scale project which may have a capacity of 67MW or higher - to be placed also on the Magat reservoir. The feasibility study phase is expected to take 10-12 months.
